Kamari Beach

Kamari Beach is Santorini's most developed and accessible beach resort — a 3-kilometre stretch of distinctive black volcanic sand and fine dark pebble on the island's eastern coast, backed by a pedestrian promenade lined with restaurants, beach bars, shops, and accommodation ranging from simple studios to boutique hotels. The beach sits at the foot of the dramatic Mesa Vouno cliff (321 metres high), at whose summit sits the ancient city of Ancient Thera — a Dorian Greek, Ptolemaic, and Roman settlement with temples, an agora, and a gymnasium, accessible via a steep footpath or an unpaved road and offering one of the finest panoramic views on the island.

The black volcanic sand at Kamari is one of the beach's most distinctive and polarising features: it absorbs heat rapidly, reaching temperatures that make barefoot walking impossible by noon in July–August (beach shoes or sandals are essential), but it also gives the water a unique deep blue-black colour in afternoon light that is specific to Santorini's volcanic geology and is entirely unlike any other beach in the Aegean. The sand itself is finely grained and clean, maintained daily by the beach services team. The promenade behind the beach is car-free, making it particularly pleasant for families — children can move freely between beach and the ice cream and café strip directly behind without road traffic concerns.

The northern end of Kamari Beach, where the volcanic cliff descends directly into the sea, offers the island's best accessible snorkelling: the cliff base is covered in a rich encrustation of marine life — sea urchins, colourful sponges, moray eels in the crevices, and schools of ornate wrasse and bream in the open water above the volcanic rock. A permanently anchored boat marks the snorkelling zone boundary. The open-air cinema at the southern end of the promenade, operating since 1984, shows international films under the Aegean stars on summer evenings — one of the best free-spirited experiences on the island.

Getting there: Regular bus service from Fira (every 30–40 minutes in season, €1.80). 9km by road from Fira Town centre. Taxi: €12–15 from Fira. Best time to visit: May–June and September–October for warm water without the midday heat extremes of July–August; the open-air cinema runs June–September.
